This video will give you a good idea of what exactly is going to be done. The short answer is that they cut the femurs, and then attach the femur to the head using a metal plate that sets them at the correct angle. Then, the bones heal back together.
A question we often get is will he need to wear a cast? No. From what the doctors tell us, these metal plates are strong enough to hold everything in place sufficiently, so no cast is needed.
There is some potential for negative side effects with this surgery. Namely, that it could cause other issues with his legs since they’re messing with the geometry of the hip. But, those risks are outweighed by the potential benefits.
