The day of. Part 3

He’s in surgery.

In pre-op, we met with the surgeon, anesthesiologist, and operating nurse. They asked us some questions and wanted to know if we had any questions. They also talked to us about some different risks and possible complications. Nothing was surprising to us, but they were a little more graphic in front of Elijah than we all usually are. Mentioning things like blood, needles, screws and plates in his legs, and so on have been mostly unheard by him up to this point.

But, now he’s heard them, and I figured “great, if he wasn’t worried before, he sure will be now.”

He did start asking us about the screws in his legs, but we just tried to focus him on something else. After a few minutes he seemed to be back to normal and we just tried to play with him and have fun. Then it was time to say goodbye. We told him we love him and we gave him hugs and kisses. Then they took him away.

After that, we composed ourselves for a few seconds and then went and had lunch with Grandma and Grandpa Atwood. That helped us get our minds off things a little bit.

We got a call about 45 minutes ago telling us that Elijah fell asleep without any problems and that there weren’t any issues with the anesthesia. They were just getting started with the surgery, so we can expect him to be done around 4:30 or 5. We’ll let you know more when we do.

Thank you for all of your prayers and support.
