Wow, four weeks since his surgery! And only 2 more weeks until he may be given the go-ahead to start walking again. Can you believe it’s going by so fast?
Today was a good day, like most of the others. He did do something new today, too. Julia took him to a Bible study she attends on Thursday mornings. It’s a fairly long outing, with them leaving around 8: 30 in the morning and not returning until around 12: 30 in the afternoon. He’s been to it before, but it’s been a while and he’s never been there in a wheelchair. I think he did have some apprehension, but I don’t think he was too worried. He mainly talked about which rooms he wouldn’t be able to go to because of either carpeting or stairs, but I think that was the biggest of his concerns. When they came home he seemed in good spirits. He told me that they went out to the playground, which I thought may have made him sad, but he said one of the volunteers sat and played go-fish with him while the other kids played. That seemed to do a good job of keeping his spirits up, and he didn’t seem sad about not playing on the playground, at least when he talked to me about it.
The afternoon was normal, and in the evening a good family friend of ours from church, Tito, brought us some dinner.
After dinner, we decided to take a dip in the pool. Elijah seemed more comfortable with it this time, though the water was a little bit colder, so it took him longer to get all the way in. Still once he did, I left him alone for the most part, and he did really well getting himself around. He’s still moving quite awkwardly, but that is to be expected. He mentioned that his toes we’re hurting, but I think it’s because he’s mostly walking on his toes in the pool. I’m not sure how much he’s actually putting his heels down or resting on his entire foot. And since his feet haven’t been getting a lot of action lately, I think everything feels different and he’ll probably get sore easier. He also mentioned like last time, that the ground felt wobbly or bumpy. Again, after asking him some questions about it, I think it’s just the feeling in his feet after not walking for a long time. He did seem to have fun in the pool, and we got to play some of the pool games we used to play before his surgery. I can see that he’s getting more comfortable doing some things with his legs in the pool, but I can also see it’s going to take a lot of work to get him back to where he was. We’ll get there though!
