Today was interesting, and a little chaotic. I guess it makes up for those other more boring days.
Elijah had physical therapy today. As I’ve mentioned, he’s been walking quite a bit at home. And maybe I haven’t said it plainly, but I have referenced his awkwardness when walking. The surgery changed the geometry of his legs, including his feet. And, sitting for 6 weeks also takes a toll on your legs. What I’m getting at is that his feet point out the sides. Some of that is due to the surgery and the way his legs can rotate now, and some of it is due to his legs being in a resting position with his feet just resting pointing outwards. The problem is now that he’s walking, he’s walking in that state of rest, so he’s walking with his feet pointing out to the sides. It’s not very natural, and doesn’t really help him walk very well. Anyway, Julia talked to the physical therapist about it, and they said that we have to work with him on walking with his feet pointing forward. He’s been trying it, and it’s tough for him. I think it will feel better as his legs get stronger, and as he gets used to it, but right now he doesn’t really like it.
We did get his new wheelchair today, so that’s a good development. It’s basically a smaller version of the one he had before. Not the first one, but the second one. This one is much more his size, and he can more easily move himself. It’s also easier for Julia and I to load into the van by ourselves. It’s also a good size for Abigail, and she loves to ride around in it any chance she gets!
Now, if you don’t know, there’s some kind of bug going around right now. It hit Julia’s sister yesterday, and seems to be working its way through her house right now. Julia’s mom is also under the weather. I don’t think she’s quite as bad as Julia’s sister yet, though, and hopefully she doesn’t get there. This somewhat affected our plans today, and some plans we had for later this week as well, but we’re more worried about the people who are sick and who it may spread to. I know that a lot of people from my office got it last week, so it’s really getting close to home. Please pray for healing for those who are sick, and pray that those who haven’t got it will be able to stay healthy.
The worst part of our day, though, just happened about an hour ago. We were sitting on the couch with the kids playing a little Mario Kart together, when all of a sudden we heard a loud rumbling crash kind of sound, almost like thunder. We’re not having any thunderstorms, so we didn’t know what happened. It definitely came from our house, so I was thinking all kinds of different things might have happened, none of which were good. I headed out front to see if I could see anything, and everything seemed to be just fine with nobody around. Then I could hear that our air conditioner didn’t sound quite right. I got out a ladder and headed up to the roof. Sure enough, the fan in the unit had broke and one of the blades was lodged in the side and blocking the other blades from spinning. This has happened once before, so I wasn’t completely shocked, but I’m not sure why they keep breaking. I thought maybe I could remove the broken blade and let the other two spin without causing any major damage. I opened up the unit and took out the blade and closed everything back up. A couple minutes later it started up with a violent shaking and rattling that I thought for sure was going to tear it apart or make ot fall off of our roof. In the heat of the moment I couldn’t get the panel open on the unit to turn the power off, so I went running down the roof, down the ladder, through the house, and out the front to our breaker box as fast as I could go. I shut off the power and headed back up to see if it was destroyed. It seemed to be okay, but we won’t know for sure until we have it checked out tomorrow. The good news in all of this, is that today has been the coolest day since probably spring, so if it was going to happen on any day, this would be the day to do it. The house should stay relatively cool overnight, and by cool I mean not getting up to a hundred degrees.
That’s just a bit of our day. We did quite a few other things, and had a pretty full day. Unfortunately, a lot of the good aspects of the day were overshadowed buy some of the negative parts. Hopefully things look a little better tomorrow!
