Dentist fail

Well, today’s trip to the dentist was a flop. This is the only story I’ll share today, so if you want to hear more about it keep reading!

As I mentioned yesterday, Elijah was supposed to have some dental work done today. We had originally scheduled it for a later date, but found out that he can only go to a pediatric dentist while he’s 6 years old or younger. Since he’s turning 7 next week, he’s not allowed to go to the pediatric dentist after that. I’m not sure why, but it’s an insurance thing. So, we had moved it up to today so we could still get it done at the pediatric dentist in time.

Since I was at work, Julia took both Abigail and Elijah. There were issues with both kids, but I’ll start with Abigail. Even though she didn’t enjoy her last trip to the dentist, she was extremely unhappy that she couldn’t sit in one of the dental chairs and watch the TV on the ceiling. So pretty much the entire time they were there, she was crying. The staff was even trying to give her toys to cheer her up, or calm her down, but even those didn’t work. She was just unhappy, and there wasn’t anything that was going to change her mind. Of course that didn’t make things easy for Julia.

On top of that, there were issues with Elijah as well. His weren’t behavioral issues, though. As they were getting ready to do the dental work, Julia mentioned his recent surgery. This caused the dentist to stop, and he started asking her questions about it. Turns out, that when a child has had surgery recently, they require that child to take an antibiotic before they will do dental work on them. He wanted to talk to someone about prescribing Elijah the antibiotic, so he started making calls to our surgeon’s office and our pediatrician. Neither were much help, or at least were able to give him the answer he was trying to get. So using his own judgment he wrote the prescription himself. But that also means that we had to reschedule Elijah’s work, and as I mentioned before we are up against a deadline since he’s turning 7 next week. They’re an extremely busy dental office, so they had to book us in a slot that was already taken, and will just squeeze us in.

And get this, Julia says the dentist said the procedure would only take about 4 minutes. Sounds like a lot of hassle for 4 minutes, but I guess it’s better to be safe than sorry.

At the end of it all, Julia had been in there for at least an hour, and nothing was done other than getting the prescription, and having one extremely unhappy child.

That was the roughest part of the day, though in the good news department, we got all of our paperwork submitted to the state government for homeschooling. It’s really not that big of a deal, but it’s something you have to do if you want to homeschool. So now we are official!
