It’s good to be home.

Sorry for the late post everyone. The first half of our day was quite hectic. Then once we got home we felt like we needed to spend our time with Elijah getting him settled back in. He’s had someone with him every minute since his surgery, so it didn’t feel right just to park him in front of the TV by himself while Julia and I went to work getting our lives back in order.

They had another good night at the hospital. Elijah went to sleep really well which was great to see. When I got to the hospital this morning, Julia told me that we’d likely be discharged within the hour. That was at about 8:30. From the moment I got there it was a pretty steady stream of different people coming in to talk with us about something, make sure we had everything we need, or to go over final instructions. In between all of those visits we had to pack up the rest of our belongings and get him ready to go. All of this took a little bit longer then we expected so we didn’t end up leaving the hospital until about 11:45.

Elijah told us last night that he was going to miss the hospital. To be honest there were things Julia and I were going to miss as well. Mostly the nurses, who were exceptional, and the access to resources we don’t have at home. Having said all that though, it felt good leaving that place, knowing we were going home.

We arrived home to some special decorations and encouraging words from our family and friends at church. And Elijah was also welcomed back with a special present from Mommy and Daddy. We never had a video game system before, but we thought this would be a great time to get one since he’s unable to do much else at this point.

We’ve spent quite a bit of time just sitting on the couch playing video games and passing the time. I took a quick trip to the store to get some special pillows and treats for Abigail and Elijah and Julia has been working on getting everything put away and catching up on the household chores. We are still figuring out just how all of this is going to work, so some of the things we’re doing right now are a little bit funny, but we’ll get it figured out.

Elijah has been doing great. He seems a bit uncomfortable at times, but he hasn’t complained too much, and we’ve been having fun playing games. We are learning how to move him by ourselves, and he’s learning how to help us with that.

The most interesting thing is that his nemesis (the hip abductor pillow) has actually become somewhat of a friend to him. At times we’ll ask him if he wants us to loosen it or to move it off of him a bit and he says no. In some way it must feel better for him to have his legs strapped to it. I’m sure there will be times where he will still get tired of it, but for now he can appreciate it.

We will see how the first night goes back at home, back in his own bed, and with Julia and I handling the pain management. Pray that it goes well. Abigail is staying with Grandma and Grandpa Rice one last night while we get situated and then she’ll be back with us tomorrow. Elijah did tell us today that he kind of misses Abigail though he did clarify it’s not a lot but a little bit. I guess that’s better than nothing!
