First day of physical therapy.

Today, Elijah started his physical therapy. We had an early morning session, which started at 7. That’s not too early for me, but Elijah was struggling waking up in the 6 o’clock hour.

We didn’t choose our own physical therapy location. This was just the one we were referred to by the doctor, most likely because it’s one of the closest to us. The funny thing is, however, that this location primarily serves the older adult population. I don’t think they get kids in there very often. Hopefully they don’t mind a little goofy 6 year old boy making some noise in there!

Today’s session was part evaluation and part physical therapy. They started with moving his legs around, pushing, and bending to see just what he could do. Then we moved on to some different exercises. There wasn’t anything too crazy, and the types of exercises we did were things you would expect to see. Basically, providing resistance and having him move his legs a number of times against that resistance to build the muscle. She also had him stand a few times to try to begin working on his balance. He did quite well with the exercises, though he’s definitely got a long way to go when it comes to standing and walking. They sent us home with a sheet detailing some of the different exercises that we can do at home to continue his therapy. He’ll go to the physical therapy sessions twice a week, with the next one on Friday. I think he was a bit unsure of it at the beginning, but by the end he was fine, and even getting a little too silly. (Sorry I didn’t get any pictures of him doing his physical therapy. I wasn’t in a good location to be able to take any decent pictures. We’ll get some videos of him doing his exercises at home to share though.)

There’s a donut shop right by this location, so after his session was done, we went over and picked up some donuts for breakfast. That may just become tradition!

After that we headed home and Elijah started his homeschooling with Julia. Later, they went to the rec center and got to see many of their friends there. Actually, one of our good friends from the rec center has the same physical therapist as Elijah!

The rest of the day was quite normal, with nothing too exciting to share. Though, it was present day, so that was some excitement for the afternoon. He had a volcano explosion kit once before and had really been wanting to get another one, so he was really excited when he opened this gift!
